In Adventures of Superman #500 (which had a spooky “translucent removable cover” that you could peel off of the Ordway Superman image on the cover - the whole thing was bagged in a WHITE polybag, with a traditional Superman "S" logo, as opposed to the black polybag with a bloody "S")., Jonathan Kent is temporarily out of his body following his heart attack, and he sees his son's spirit, and decides to fight to save it. Jerry Ordway's contract with DC as the writer of Adventures of Superman technically expired with #499, but DC allowed him to write #500, and take in those very nice royalties, as a pleasant farewell from the series.

So how, exactly, did Superman return to life? Then, though, in a shocking approach, DC literally ended the Superman titles in January 1993, and not only did they end the titles, but they ended them with Jonathan Kent, Superman's adopted father, seemingly dying, as well, of a heart attack, while Lex Luthor appeared to be totally triumphant in the wake of his rival's death. At this time the baby had no super powers. Since he appeared entirely human, the Kents assumed that the baby was a victim of a cruel experiment. Jonathan and Martha Kent found the infant inside the vessel and brought him to their farm in Smallville, Kansas.
Then, the "Funeral for a Friend" storyline began, with Superman's funeral being handled very well, along with the rest of the DC Universe reacting to Superman's passing (including a touching Christmas issue where the various superheroes all answered the mail that was sent to Superman at Christmastime). Superman was, in effect, born on Earth when the starcraft landed there.
