In Adventures of Superman #500 (which had a spooky “translucent removable cover” that you could peel off of the Ordway Superman image on the cover - the whole thing was bagged in a WHITE polybag, with a traditional Superman "S" logo, as opposed to the black polybag with a bloody "S")., Jonathan Kent is temporarily out of his body following his heart attack, and he sees his son's spirit, and decides to fight to save it. Jerry Ordway's contract with DC as the writer of Adventures of Superman technically expired with #499, but DC allowed him to write #500, and take in those very nice royalties, as a pleasant farewell from the series.

Then, the "Funeral for a Friend" storyline began, with Superman's funeral being handled very well, along with the rest of the DC Universe reacting to Superman's passing (including a touching Christmas issue where the various superheroes all answered the mail that was sent to Superman at Christmastime). Superman was, in effect, born on Earth when the starcraft landed there.
